Job Description

Executive Director Job Description:

Board Governance:

-Works with the Board of Directors to fulfill state and federal legal requirements.
-Responsible for communicating effectively with the board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the board to function properly and to make informed decisions.
-Responsible for working with the Board to fulfill the Legal Duties of the Board of Directors set out by the State of Montana and Federal Government.

Financial Performance and Sustainability:

-Works with board and staff to lead a financially responsible, sustainable, and transparent organization.
-Responsible for fundraising and developing other revenues necessary to support Compassion Project’s mission in partnership with staff and the Board of Directors.
-Responsible for the fiscal integrity of Compassion Project.
-Responsible for submitting an annual budget and quarterly financial statements that accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization.
-Responsible for fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures effective resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.

Organization Mission and Strategy:

-Works with board and staff to ensure the mission is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning, and community outreach.
-Responsible for the implementation of Compassion Project’s programs that carry out the organization’s mission.
-Responsible for strategic planning to ensure that Compassion Project can successfully fulfill its mission into the future.
-Responsible for the enhancement of Compassion Project’s image by being active and visible in the community and by working closely with other professional, public, and private organizations.

Organization Operations:

-Oversees and implements appropriate resources to ensure the operations are conducted in a manner that is fiscally responsible and supportive of the organization’s values.
-Responsible for the hiring and retention of competent, qualified staff.
-Responsible for signing all notes, agreements, MOU’s and other instruments made and entered into on behalf of the organization.

Team Culture:

-Cultivates a team culture aligned with the Compassion Project’s mission, vision, values, and principles.
-Responsible for modeling the organization’s values through daily actions.
-Responsible for correcting and improving policies and practices that disrupt harmful and oppressive systems and norms. These oppressive systems include patriarchy, capitalism, white supremacy and racism, and ableism.
-Responsible for striving to build an organization that welcomes and celebrates diversity, advances justice and equity, and practices inclusion.
-Responsible for being receptive to feedback and taking measures to improve and repair relationships and conditions through an accountability process if harm is done.

Executive Director Work Tasks:

-Report to and work closely with the Board of Directors to seek their involvement in policy decisions, fundraising, and meeting legal requirements.
-Supervise and collaborate with organization staff and volunteers.
-Build and lead programmatic workshops, trainings, and events.
-Train program volunteers.
-Lead strategic planning and implementation.
-Plan operations and annual budget.
-Serve as Compassion Project’s primary spokesperson.
-Establish and maintain relationships with partnering organizations.
-Engage in fundraising and developing other revenues.
-Oversee marketing and other communications efforts.
-Oversee organization board and committee meetings.
-Review and approve contracts for services.
-Participate in and receive regular leadership training and support.
-Other situation-specific duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.

Executive Director Job Qualifications:

-4 or more years management experience
-3 or more years in the nonprofit or public sector
-High level strategic thinking and planning skills
-Ability to envision and convey the organization’s strategic future to the staff, board, volunteers and donors
-Effective written and oral communication skills
-Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff
-A history of successfully generating new revenue streams and improving financials results
-Active fundraising experience in grant writing, securing sponsorships, in-kind donations, and other means
-Strong project management skills, including planning, delegating, program development, and task facilitation
-Strong public speaking ability
-Strong work ethic with a high degree of energy
-Passion and demonstrated commitment to the organization’s values (Compassion in action)
-2 or more years background in arts, education, and mindfulness or related fields such as mental health, teaching, administration, or case management





Compensation and Benefits:

-The Executive Director, while employed by Compassion Project, will earn $50-70,000 (pre-tax) annually.

-Hours will be approximately 40 hours of work per week.

-The ED will be able to set their own work schedule, as long as time allows for effective collaboration with donors, board members, volunteers, and other staff.

-The ED will be able to set and take sick and vacation time as needed as long as they are present for key, strategic planning sessions and work is being completed to the level described in this agreement. The ED will, as often as possible, let the Board, volunteers, and staff know when they plan to take leave time. If leave is taken for a period greater than three full weeks, the Board may make accommodations to keep work moving forward.

-The ED will be supported by being provided technology, materials, supplies, and training necessary to successfully advance in their position and fulfill their job responsibilities.
